Person Of Interest: Lucie Ferguson (Babyanything)
Person Of Interest is all about finding out a little more about business owners and creatives that are killing it out there and that we really admire. This week we are thrilled to bring to you the artistic intellect behind Babyanything jewellery, a lady of the greatest talent and of the sweetest heart… Lucie Ferguson.
Instagram Handle and Website: @babyanything www.babyanything.com.au
Where are you based and what do you do?
I am based in Terrigal, a beachside town 2 hours north of Sydney, Australia. I am a Fine Jeweller, I own my own jewellery company, Babyanything and design and hand manufacture all the pieces made out of precious metal and stones.
What does your average working day entail?
A bit of everything, from computer admin work in the home office to madly sketching new ideas for pieces, then out to the jewellery workshop to finish customer orders and polishing jewellery pieces late into the night.
What inspired you to make Jewellery in the first place and what continues to inspire you on a daily basis?
I went for an interview at a Fine Art University for photography and sculpture and one of the Jewellery Lecturers was on the panel and convinced me to swap over to that department based on the fashion aesthetic in my photography and sculpture works. I originally made furniture in my degree and in the last year I finally picked up my jewellery tools and was hooked. I then went back to study my apprenticeship in the trade department at TAFE so I was fully qualified. I am inspired but pieces I want to wear. I am obsessed by youth sub cultures and draw a lot of inspiration by being involved in Surf, skate and street culture. I also draw inspiration from my favourite films, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, Almost Famous and The Virgin Suicides, I design pieces for the characters to wear.
How would you describe your personal style?
I am a dichotomy just like the 'Babyanything' girl I design for one day I am 70's inspired, always denim, long blonde hair with a middle part and a flowing hippie blouse. The next day I'll toughen it up with a vintage leather jacket and boots.
What is your ideal way to relax at the end of a long day in the studio?
I am a water baby, a true Piscean I always like to start or end the day with an ocean swim.
What was the best advice you ever received?
From my angel of a mother Kim, "Don't give up, dress up". A reminder to just keep going no matter how hard the battle is you are facing that day.
Are you a regular or sporadic candle burner?
Regular! I used to keep candles for special occasions but now I burn one everyday.
If you could capture the scent of any location in the world and put it in a candle, what would it be and why?
I would capture the coconut and frangipani scent of Hawaii. I have travelled to Oahu twice in the last year and it has put a spell on me, the people, the water and the vibe of the island is mesmerising.
What is your one guilty pleasure you love too much too give up?
Chocolate! In every kind imaginable! And 80's prom dresses, I have a collection that I have bought over the years in vintage stores and I have them all in my closet waiting for their big moment to shine.
What song are you playing on repeat at the moment?
‘I blame myself' Skye Ferreira.
Thanks Lucie!!
