Meet The Maker: Blushing Confetti

Blushing Confetti is a fun, stylish stationary brand from sunny Brisbane. Run by husband and wife duo Ellen and Nathan (Mr Blushing as Ellen affectionately calls him), we love the ethos behind their greeting cards, notepads, prints and more - you just can’t beat a brand that prides themselves on using the best quality materials and on being entirely Australian made.

“All BC fine paper delights are designed by hand by myself and then all materials are sourced and made/printed in Australia. Afterwards it comes back to us to hand assemble everything ready for sale.”

With this personal, hand-made touch comes a unique quality, each piece lovingly crafted right down to the smallest detail.

As for the name, Blushing Confetti immediately connotes feelings of joy and celebration whilst hinting towards elegance and panache, but where did it come from?

“(The name) Blushing Confetti came about when I started designing wedding stationery. Although we don't do much of that anymore it's where BC started! We wanted to create a fun yet sophisticated brand and I guess having Confetti in your name automatically leads you to fun!”

Now, cast your mind back to digging out the felt tip pens or colouring pencils and attempting to stay within the lines as you shaded your favourite Disney character’s hair in purple. It was during these early years that Ellen’s love for art and illustration was nurtured.

“…You had to pry that (colouring) pencil out of my hand. I have always had a passion for art and had a huge focus on it in school, which obviously then continued on into university."

The foundations for a career in stationary and illustration were clearly laid very early on and now Ellen draws on “literally everything” for the inspiration behind her unique designs, but in particular - interiors;

“… A lot of inspiration for me comes from interiors. I love textures, colours, and metals and I try to translate that into my work."

With strong principles of delivering a high quality product, entirely Australian made and using the best materials out there, Ellen faced challenges when first launching the business.

“The biggest challenge was definitely sourcing and working with suppliers who believe in your vision and high standards. We always want to maintain the high quality in each and every product and when you are starting out only ordering small amounts it can be very tough to find people to work with you.”

Blushing Confetti has since established their own niche in the market and there are now big things on the horizon, starting with a trip to The Big Apple.

“We are off to the New York Stationery Show...literally in a couple of days. It by far has been the biggest challenge to date but very exciting... stay tuned!

Staying closer to home, we wanted to get the low down from Ellen on how to spend 24 hours in her city, Brisbane.

“You can find me brunching at either Rabbit Hole, Plenty or Miss Bliss on a Saturday, followed by the West End markets. It's my chill out place! For the evening, a secret gem in Brisbane if you love Italian is Verve Cafe, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but walk down into the underground restaurant and smell the aromas of good food, yum yum!! Then head out to Eagle Street for some classy drinks!”

Thanks Ellen and good luck in NYC!
